Soccer

Soccer, known as football in most countries outside of North America, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is to score goals by getting a ball into the opposing team’s net using any part of the body except the arms and hands. The game is played on a rectangular field, known as a pitch, with a goal at each end. It is typically governed by a set of rules termed the Laws of the Game, which are maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

Soccer is one of the most popular sports globally, characterized by its simplicity and accessibility, requiring minimal equipment to play. Matches are usually divided into two halves of 45 minutes each. The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins, although if the score is tied, the game may end in a draw or proceed to extra time or penalties, depending on the competition rules.

The sport has a rich history and a significant cultural impact, with numerous domestic leagues, international competitions like the FIFA World Cup, and millions of fans around the world. Major governing bodies include FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), which oversees international play and organizes major international competitions.
